Last Friday, the 02nd March at just after 5pm, I set out the two hour journey that would take me to the little town of Robertson, which is essentially the gateway to Route 62. I belong to the Helderberg Happy Campers Club, a endearingly ridiculous name for a group of people who get together once a month for a weekend of camping in beautiful locations around the Western Cape. This weekend we were camping in a little spot called Riverzicht, located on the banks of the Breede River below the Langeberg Mountains. I had never been there before so didn’t quite know what to expect. Thankfully I was very pleasantly surprised! The campsite is sandwiched between the river and a vineyard and has two lapas dedicated to campers. For those of you who don’t know, a lapa is a semi enclosed area with a large fireplace in the middle where bonfires are built, cooking is done and many late night conversations are had.
Our group was about 30 strong this weekend, made up mostly of families with children ranging from 3 to 15 years of age. Weekends are therefore usually filled with fishing, cricket, swimming, hiking, getting dirty and playing, and then once the kids have tired out some serious wine appreciation for the adults. All was going according to plan until some ominous rain clouds starting rolling in about 4pm on Saturday evening. Within an hour there was a solid downpour with all the men scrabbling to put up our enormous enclosed gazebo bought for the club last year in preparation for just such an eventuality. The rain continued to pour throughout the night, only offering brief respites now and again which we used to gather around the fire and dry off. Needless to say a little water couldn’t dampen our enjoyment of the weekend! A few of us even broke away to go late night swimming in the Breede River in the pouring rain.
Admittedly when Sunday rolled around we were only too eager to clean up, pack up, get home and crack open a bottle of red wine in front of our respective fireplaces! Next camp is Easter Weekend which I will unfortunately not be attending due to family commitments, but I’ll be hosting the HHCC camp in May so watch this space!
