Klein Genot - Franschhoek

by Katherine Terry

My parents celebrated their 40th Wedding Anniversary last week, and in order to celebrate this monumental achievement, my father asked me suggest somewhere for them to go and stay for a few days !

The brief from my 'toughest' clients was very clear. The hotel had to be within comfortable driving distance of Cape Town, it had to be luxurious but not obstentious, it had to have good food, and it had to be the kind of place that two people celebrating their Ruby Wedding anniversary would not feel out of place. In recent years, I have had such fantastic feedback about Klein Genot in Franschhoek, that there was no doubt in my mind that this was the perfect choice for them.

Klein Genot is situated on its own private estate in the middle of the valley, and only about 5 minutes drive from the centre of Franschhoek. It is a perfect base to explore the Winelands, or simply, as in the case of my parents, somewhere to just relax and unwind.

Angie Diamond who owns and runs Klein Genot carefully applied some Feng Shui principals into the design of Klein Genot. Without sight nor sound of a buddha or a red tassled Octagonal Mirror, the place just feels magical and something clearly works ! In the words of my mother  " Katherine - do you know in forty years of marriage,  this is the first place I've ever stayed at with your father and never had an argument ? " she continued  " its something to do with Feng Shui and I think when we get home we will have to get someone in to come and Feng Shui our house ! " . " Yeah right " - I thought " there will no doubt be a row when he  discovers how much it cost to actually get someone to Feng Shui your house ! ". I smiled and kept my mouth shut.

They ate like kings in Franschhoek. From the formal environment of Grande Provence to the Winecellar at Haute Cabriere.  I drove up as a surprise to join them on their last night and Angie and her team are on great terms with all the 5 star award winning restaurants in Franshhoek , they even managed to organise a table for us at Ruebens.

Yes - from their delicious homecooked breakfasts, to homegrown organic fruit platters, to their open bar and someone to drive them home after dinner, Klein Genot was definately a 'hit' and somewhere that I continue to have no hesitation to recommend. My parents are already planning their next trip !
