Daytrips to the Winelands from Cape Town

by Niki Duncan

Being in such a beautiful place like Cape Town, there is so much to do on a weekend!  The Winelands area nearby is a great place to stop for a day trip and here you have a choice of visiting three towns: Paarl, Franschhoek or Stellenbosch, all within about 1 hour’s drive from the city. Each town has it’s own unique characteristics but I truly love Franschhoek. We recently visited there in February when we had some friends out of town to come visit and we were so impressed with the many restaurants, café’s and art galleries you can visit. The town was looking clean and slick and it was so pleasant to walk along the roadside on a hot summer’s day!  We had lunch at a beautiful and highly recommended restaurant called Grande Provence. It is on a wine estate about 5 minutes by road from the town centre and just next to the Franschhoek Country House and Monneaux Restaurant, which I have also had the privilege of visiting. Grande Provence is very well-known for it’s food and yes, we proved it – the food was out of this world!

On another occasion, I had the opportunity to stay at Klein Genot Country House, which is also in Franschhoek, although not within walking distance of the town but worth a visit if you are looking for a romantic getaway in the country-side with great hospitality! The house is beautifully decorated with exquisite artwork and unique personal touches, for example the flowers that were hand-picked from the gardens. What’s more is that High Tea and local drinks are included in the rate, which we didn’t realise, and so were lavished with delectable cakes, scones, chocolates, sandwiches, tea, coffees etc. when we arrived!

Have a look at the picture below of the beautiful Franshhoek Winelands:
