Camping in Stilbaai

by Gareth Turner

Located about 3 hours from Cape Town is the sleepy fisherman’s village of Stilbaai, with is extremely tidal river, this holiday destination is very popular with South Africans and you only have to be there for an hour to find out why.

With the river at your doorstep, every known watersport is available from quiet fishing to the extreme sport of wakeboarding or if sitting back is more your style then a late afternoon sundowner cruise would be right up your alley, this said camping is never complete without the ever popular mass braai (Barbeque), this is a challenge to even the seasoned braai veteran.

Getting on to what is by far the highlight of a trip like this, an early start and on the river as soon as possible, making your way up river to where it becomes that little less tidal allowing you to enjoy the full use of this beautiful river. With everything you can think of packed onto the boat, your day up river is never complete without that mid-afternoon fishing, this year proving to be the best year so far, with our fishing expert reeling in two beautiful Carp, which is and can only be cooked riverside as soon as possible, so with fish cooking away our extreme sport enthusiasts move out onto the river to try and teach a few beginners the art of wakeboarding, which I can tell you is allot harder that you think. So with the day drawing to a close, what more could you ask for, Stilbaai is truly a beautiful destination and if you are ever in the area, pop in you will be pleasantly surprised.

Until my next camping adventure, Cheers
