Rhino Africa Safaris

Durban and the Mozambique Islands

by Niki Duncan

I would like to add my say to a unique experience called Indaba. I must say, I was feeling very proud to be at the centre of this travel show with so many big players and it was great to put many names to faces. Many people in the tourism industry go for the partying (and maybe a bit of work), but some do actually go for the work (and not the partying). For us twelve Rhino Africans who descended on the place, it was a mixture of both! By the time we had hit day three, we were all so exhausted; we were longing for our own beds and wishing we didn’t have to endure the Durban heat! However it was great fun and I personally came away with a lot of product knowledge – a lot of which I am going to insist gets added to our website.

Among the destinations we explored, I was most intrigued with Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique. These are simply superb places and add such diversity to this place we call Africa!

I was glad to learn more about the islands called the Quirimbas Archipelago off the coast of Mozambique - I only really know the Vilanculos / Bazaruto / Benguerra lodges and most of these are closed due to the cyclone. So a great option is the Quirimbas Archipelago islands – there are 32 islands in this area and the lodges here are small and very personal! The access is from Pemba and because SA Airlink now flies to Pemba twice a week (on Tuesdays & Saturdays), it makes it a lot easier.

Be sure to watch this space – we will be featuring more and more of these unique lodges which include Ibo Island Camp, Vumizi Island, Medjumbe Island Lodge and Matemo Island amongst others!
