Table Mountain Cableway
by Katherine Terry
We have just received notification that the Table Mountain Cableway will be closed for its annual repairs from the 23 July – 05 August 2007. Hardly surprising that the Cable Car needs an annual service when you read a little bit about the facts of the Cable Car!
- A Cable Car travels up the Mountain every 10 – 15 Minutes
- The Table Mountain Cable Car travels from 363 metres above sealevel to a whopping 1067metres above sea level
- The Cableway can carry about 65 passengers at any one given time
- Originally built in 1929 , the most recent Cable Cars were introduced in 1997 and consist of revolving floors to give visitors a 360 degree view of Cape Town as they travel up and down the Mountain.
- Table Mountain Cable Way runs on average for more than 12 hours a day.
- Over 16 million passengers have traveled on the Cable Car since 1929.
- There are over 1500 species of plants on top of Table Mountain, more than you would find in the United Kingdom
- Be sure to look out for the Rock Hyrax that live on top of the Mountain. The closest living relative of the elephant, but the size of a small rabbit.
If you do happen to be visiting Cape Town between the 23 July 2007 and 05 August 2007 and you don’t want to miss out on a trip up Table Mountain, then Contact Rhino Africa about arranging a Hike up Table Mountain or even a Helicopter Flip over the Mountain.
