Aubergine Restaurant Review

by Katherine Terry

From our old Rhino Africa Offices we would often smell the wonderful aromas wafting from our next door neighbour, Aubergine Restaurant, last night I actually got the opportunity to go to Aubergine for dinner ! A treat especially after a year of only nasally appreciating their food.......

I’d last been to Aubergine about 6 years ago, when I remember the menu being very complicated, with small portions and a lot happening on the plate. Food, that in my opinion had been over done and messed with. The interiors were quite austere and dark, this coupled with the efficient waiting staff, did, in my opinion make for quite a formal dining atmosphere.

Last year we watched with interest as the restaurant was renovated. I knew they had bashed the building about a bit, added some travertine marble floors, funky lights, modern chairs, see through wine cellar and added a bar.

What I hadn’t, realized is Harold Bresselschmidt had bashed his menu around a bit too – and what a pleasant surprise!

For starters we had Chicken Liver Parfait with 3 different salads and Guinea Fowl Gallantine. Both beautifully plated and tasting delicious. For main course we opted for the Beef Fillet with Bordeloise Sauce and Bone Marrow and the East Meets West Fish Dish. Both were cooked to perfection, with sauces that complimented the dishes perfectly.  Our waiter was able to recommend and serve the perfect wine to match our meal, which they served by the glass.

On a cold winters night (like last night), the Aubergine Restaurant was welcoming and warm. They are currently running a very affordable winter menu. On a mid summers day they serve dinner in the Open Air Courtyard under the large palm tree.

Now I have had the chance to experience it again - I can highly recommend Aubergine Restaurant, and certainly deserving of its place as one of the top restaurants in Cape Town!
