Biltong Ban on Flights to the UK

by Katherine Terry

I was doing some research on the internet this morning and discovered on the Air Namibia website that the United Kingdom has banned Biltong !

Well not literally banned Biltong - but banned tourists from bringing back Biltong from South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and other African countries known for producing Biltong.

I quote " Visitors from Southern Africa to the UK will no longer be allowed to pack biltong or dry wors for friends and family. With the implementation of the "If In Doubt - Leave It Out" media campaign for Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs, the UK has clamped down on all animal products to the country. Transgressors of the ban could be fined up to £ 1,000 (approximately ZAR14,000) or be liable for prosecution. Visitors are furthermore warned that the ban includes vacuum packed meat products and that 'meat patrols' have been implemented for flights arriving from South Africa. The security measure is the result of sensitivity to possible pests that could be brought to the island via food parcels "

Biltong is very strongly part of South African Culture and when you travel to South Africa you are sure to see it and we encourage you to try some !

Not dissimilar to Beef Jerky in the United States, Biltong is a Air Dried Spiced Beef which is cured for periods of between 1 week and many weeks, depending on how dry you like your biltong. Droe Wors is directly  translated as Dry Sausage and is a salami style meat stick air cured and dried in a similar way. Droewors and Biltong are very popular snack dishes in South Africa and forms part of the South African Culture. History tells the story that the Biltong was air dried on the back of the Voortrekkers Oxwagons and was a way of preserving their meat.

Both beef, ostrich and game meat is used to make Biltong and Droe Wors. Its high in Protein and low fat versions are available. Many game lodges serve it at sundowner snacks and its readily available at shops throughout Southern Africa.
