Salt Restaurant Review

by Katherine Terry

Last night a friend and myself treated ourselves to dinner at Salt Restaurant at the Ambassador Hotel. As one of the most talked about restaurants in Cape Town, I’d been looking for an opportunity to go there for a while. Salt’s head chef Peter Goffe Wood is a well known celebrity chef in Cape Town, his methodology being simple, tasty food.

Salt Restaurant did not disappoint me.

Chef Peter Goffe Wood has created an exciting menu with  Seafood, good South African steaks and curries all making an appearance. My starter of Tagliatelle with Cream, Mushrooms, Gremolata and Truffle Oil was delicious. I choose Salt and Pepper Squid with Rocket , Burnt Lemons  and Chilli for Main Course, and it was delicious, if perhaps a little under seasoned. The desserts were equally inviting, and the Bread and Butter pudding with Berries and White Chocolate was the perfect winters dessert. Salt has an extensive winelist and it was nice that all wines are served by the glass.

If I had one criticism it would have to be the service. The waiters were obviously contending with a large group who had sat down minutes before we had, and I would hope that in the absence of a group, the service might be a little slicker and the waiters a little bit more ‘ on the ball’ !

The décor is minimalist and trendy with large floor to ceiling windows, with views of the Atlantic Ocean. Salt Restaurant comes into its own during the day when the views are fantastic. Try and request a window seat in order to get the full benefit of the uninterrupted views. Salt has arguably the best views of any restaurant in Cape Town and food that I believe is definitely deserving of all the recent hype and interest.
