Your Guide to Tipping in Africa

Tipping practices vary from place to place, but the golden rule is simple: offer what feels comfortable and appropriate for the level of service received.

These recommendations are intended as helpful guidelines for showing appreciation while travelling in Africa.

Tipping on Safari

At safari lodges, many dedicated people work together to make your stay as memorable as possible. Here’s what to consider when acknowledging the teams that help create an exceptional wilderness experience.

Safari Guide

Your guide will spend meaningful time with you throughout your stay, from early morning game drives to afternoon or evening adventures. Their deep knowledge, sharp instincts, and storytelling often become one of the most memorable parts of the trip.

We recommend setting aside about $25 (R475 or €23) per couple per day for your guide.

Safari Tracker

Your tracker will accompany the guide on the game drive, but has a different role. They’re experts at finding even the most elusive animals, so that they can show you all the wonders of the African animal kingdom.

You may wish to offer around $20 (R380 or €19) per couple per day to thank your tracker.

Safari or Hotel Butler

A butler can add a wonderfully personal touch to your stay, whether arranging your favourite drink, anticipating small preferences, or ensuring each detail feels effortless.

We advise tipping your safari or hotel butler $18 (R340 or €17) per couple per day for their efforts.

Safari Lodge or Hotel General Staff

The broader lodge or hotel team keeps everything running smoothly, from polished facilities to warm welcomes and thoughtful service throughout your stay.

A gratuity of around $18 (R340 or €17) per couple per day is suggested for all of their hard work.

Exploring the City

Discovering a new city is even more rewarding with a knowledgeable local by your side. Whether you’re visiting cultural landmarks, scenic viewpoints, galleries, markets, or acclaimed restaurants, guidance can make the experience feel richer and more seamless.

City Tours: Half-Day Guide

You’ll likely go on at least one half-day tour with a guide when exploring our beautiful Africa. For a half-day guide, we recommend tipping $10-15 (R190-285 or €9-14) per couple.

City Tours: Full-Day Guide

A full-day guide will spend an entire day with you, driving you around and accompanying you to all the incredible attractions you visit. We suggest tipping $15-20 (R285-380 or €14-19) per couple.

Restaurants and Bars

Across much of Africa, diners generally tip between 10% and 15% of the total bill. For particularly attentive service, guests are welcome to offer more.

Road Transfer Drivers

Transfer drivers are responsible for safely transporting you between airports, lodges, and other destinations – often navigating long distances and varying road conditions.

We suggest tipping $5-10 (R95-190 or €4-9) per couple per trip.

When and How to Tip

Tipping is usually done discreetly at the end of your stay at a lodge or hotel. If you’re unsure about the best approach, you’re always welcome to ask the lodge or hotel manager for guidance. Each property may have its own recommendations, and these can vary slightly from the general guidelines we’ve shared here.

In many cases, you can also add gratuities to your credit card payment. Simply let the manager know how you’d like the total amount allocated, whether that’s to your guide, tracker, butler, general staff, or a combination of team members. They’ll then ensure your gratuity is distributed accordingly, allowing you to offer one larger amount while still recognising each person’s contribution.
