What constantly amazes me about Africa is the proximity and abundance of quality accommodation literally on one’s very doorstep. Such is definitely the case with Clifftop Lodge, which situated in the Waterberg area of Limpopo province, is only a two hour drive from Johannesburg and only three hours from Madikwe National Park. For those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city for a relaxing time, Clifftop is definitely worth a look.
Thanks to Rudi and Cindy at 3 cities who invited us out, I got to experience the lodge first hand. A place of relaxation and rest so close to the city is perfect for those looking for a weekend getaway a short hop from the big smoke (Johannesburg).
The well appointed thatch-roofed lodge provides all the comfort and amenities one would expect from an exclusive lodge of its calibre and it position high up on the cliff face and overlooking the Sterkstroom River provides a magnificent view. The rooms too are well appointed and each has its own deck and plunge pool. I particularly enjoyed the outside shower, nothing quite as refreshing as an early morning plunge followed by a warm shower with a view.
The game viewing at Clifftop is done in the privately owned Welgevonden game reserve, although we didn’t see all on offer; guests have the opportunity to see lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, rhino, elephant, zebra, giraffe and plenty of other mammals, birds and trees. Any shortfall in the game viewing is well offset by the Lodges superb facilities. The food, a fusion of Western and African flavours is of the highest quality and is well paired with great wines from Clifftop’s onsite and well stocked wine cellar.
I would recommend Clifftop to those looking to get the bush experience for a short stay on Johannesburg’s doorstep whilst enjoying all the luxuries of five star accommodations and dining. I might be picking bones here, but a lodge with facilities such as these could do with the addition of a spa facility, it would certainly have completed my stay.
