Set discreetly along the banks of the expansive Zambezi River is Royal Chundu, a sanctuary whose beauty is only surpassed by its outlook. Located in Zambia, its riverscape is perfectly captured from its location along the border of both Zambia and Zimbabwe, where the iconic Victoria Falls, uproarious and epic, makes its curtain descent 30km further downstream.

Royal Chundu’s two lodges, River Lodge and Island Lodge, both enjoy panoramic views of the scenic waters of the Zambezi; a setting whose romance must be experienced to be believed. River Lodge has 10 suites that, from their setting within a canopy of riverine greenery, offer luxury and blissful seclusion. Meanwhile the Island Lodge, with its 4 spacious villas, is flanked by the Katombora Island’s flowing waters.

There’s not a more thorough – or intimate – way to explore the breadth of the Zambezi and it’s surrounding splendour than on a sunset and sunrise cruise. While surrounded by open nature, you’ll be bathed in refreshing light as dawn and dusk’s subtle hues envelop you from above. Royal Chundu guests favour this experience, which takes you down one of Africa’s most magnificent rivers on a pontoon boat. Crocodiles and hippos on the river banks are just some of the wonders to behold while enjoying your choice of refreshments.

In dry months the skipper will anchor near Ellie Corner where herds of elephants, impala, warthog and buffalo can been seen from the exposed sandbanks.

Canoe

By Canoe, you can explore the upper Zambezi river and see hippo and crocodile in their plenty. Guides will accompany you downstream in an inflatable canoe – from Katombora rapids through the channels of the Zambezi island and down to a picnic spot on the riverbank. There you can view hundreds of bird species or simply take in the glorious scenery.
