A safari is an exhilarating adventure. Trust us, even we still have butterflies in our stomachs when we get into a game drive vehicle. But a trip into Africa’s wilderness also requires careful preparation. Our Travel Experts have been on countless safaris across Africa, and they know exactly what it takes to make the most of this unique experience. So, by all means, please take full advantage of their extensive travel experience. Here's our ultimate packing list of 10 essentials they never leave behind.

Cheers to a carefully planned safari in Africa

1. Sunscreen

Africa's sun can be unforgiving. Even if you're used to soaking up the rays back home, it's important to protect your skin. Pack a high-SPF sunscreen and reapply it regularly, especially during those long game drives.

“The African sun is harsher than many of our guests are used to. So, sunscreen is an absolute essential!” Samantha Myburgh.

2. Sunglasses

Furthermore, our bright African sun can make even the most stunning landscapes hard to enjoy without a good pair of sunglasses. Polarised lenses are a bonus, helping you take in the scenery without squinting and with clarity.

3. Wide-Brimmed Hat

You usually head out on open vehicles when going on game drives, which means no roof! This leaves you more exposed to the elements. Pack a wide-brimmed hat to not only keep the sun off your face but also to protect your neck and ears, which are spots that are often overlooked.

4. Swimming Costume

In between game drives, there's nothing better than a refreshing dip in the pool. Many of our recommended luxury lodges feature swimming pools with gorgeous vistas. Keep your swimming costume handy to cool off and unwind. Oh, and you’ll never know who might join you – birds, plain game or even thirsty elephants.

5. Insect Repellent

Unfortunately, mosquitoes are a reality in some safari regions. Along with consulting your doctor for malaria prophylaxis where necessary, be sure to bring insect repellent to ward off any unwanted insects.

6. Warm Jacket

A warm jacket in Africa? Yes, you read this right. During winter, temperatures in the bush can drop to around zero degrees Celsius. A warm jacket, beanie and scarf will keep you comfortable. Even if you’re travelling in summer, a windbreaker or rain jacket is a must.

“A light, packable jacket is perfect for early mornings in the hotter months when on safari.” – Celeste le Roux.

7. Comfortable Walking Shoes

Our Travel Experts always travel with comfortable walking shoes. They are a safari basic, even if you’re not planning a walking safari. From walking to and from your room to exploring bush trails, sturdy shoes will go a long way to protect you from the elements.

“An African safari can be all action at times. Comfy walking shoes are the kind of small thing that can make a huge difference to your experience.” – Janine Gous.

8. Small Backpack

A lightweight backpack is perfect for carrying your water bottle, camera gear and extra layers. It's a convenient way to have your hands free for those perfect photo opportunities. In addition, it allows you to keep things organised in your game drive vehicle.

“A daypack means I can keep the essentials on hand and keeps me prepared for just about anything on safari.” – Desire Saayman.

9. Camera and Extra Memory Cards

You'll want to capture every magical moment, from lion cubs playing to sunsets over the savannah. We totally get it! To avoid disappointment, make sure to pack extra memory cards. And if you’re a photography enthusiast, please let our Travel Experts know, so we can plan a specialised photo safari for you.

“I never travel without my camera. There are so many magical moments to capture, it’s one of the first things I pack!” – Justine Ryan.

10. Sarong or Kikoi

This versatile item is a true safari swiss knife! It can serve as a scarf, towel or even a light blanket during those chilly mornings. Plus, it’s compact and easy to pack away.

“I’m a big fan of a kikoi or sarong. It feels like it has absolutely endless uses on any trip I go on.” Bianca Johnstone.
