Making the most of the Seychelles

January 11, 2010

The Seychelles is certainly no cheap destination, so I think the key to a successful holiday is to determine exactly what you want out of your Indian Ocean Islands experience. There is something for everyone, and if you are simply looking for a relaxing beach holiday with some great snorkelling or scubadiving, then the main islands of Mahe or Praslin will suffice. It is worth bearing in mind that as soon as you start including more secluded and private islands into your itinerary (and there are 115 islands in total in the Seychelles), costs start to soar – your credit card may not thank you!

Mahe alone has 70 picture postcard beaches, some excellent snorkelling spots and some great resort type hotels. Driving on Mahe is also really easy, so you can simply pick up a car at the airport (at the fraction of the cost of a taxi or transfer) and it promises tons of fun. The island is only 27km long, with one traffic light, so you really can’t get lost! Just remember this is not Heathrow or JFK – your car will come with an empty tank, so your first stop will be at the petrol station across the road.  Exploring the idyllic island is the stuff beach dreams are made of – for families, couples or honeymooners alike. At 4 degrees south of the equator the weather is always great, with temperatures ranging between 22 and 32°C and humidity between 60 and 95%. So pack lightly – it is gonna be hot!

If you desire a more exclusive island getaway, or diving is your priority, then North Island or Des Roches are for you. But with the advent of global warming, and the destruction of the corals on the shallower atolls due to rising sea temperatures, be sure to ask an expert before settling on an itinerary. The Seychelles offers some of the best diving in the world, but the trick is to choose deep atolls that are fed by Indian Ocean currents, where corals and marine life are still prolific.

Diving and Snorkelling can be a family affair in the Seychelles

The Seychelles is well connected to Africa, just 4.5 hours from Johannesburg and 3 hours from Nairobi, making it the perfect beach extension to your African Safari.
