Spectacular garden views and unimaginable dining experiences, The Cellars-Hohenort in Cape Town’s leafy suburb Constantia is the perfect place for all those seeking a break in a historical setting. I recently had the opportunity to spend one night at this grand property, thereby escaping the mundane and stepping into an enchanting experience, complete with wondrous views and all the luxurious comforts you could want.

History and Heritage Rich Hotel

Over 300 years of history in the making, the 5-star Cellars-Hohenort, located in the historical Constantia Valley, is one of the most exceptional and renowned hotels in the Cape. One of the things I enjoyed most about my trip to the Cellars-Hohenort is delving into the rich history and heritage of how the hotel has become what it is today. It was intriguing to learn about the property’s humble beginnings as a farm in the 17th century, known initially as Klassenbosch, to becoming part of the prestigious Liz McGrath Collection.

Gardens with a Story

Not only is the hotel historically rich in its infrastructure, but in its surrounding environment too. With over three centuries of flourishing gardens, various flowers, vines, fruit, vegetables and indigenous plants have grown on this land. In fact, some of the oldest camphor trees growing in these gardens trace back to over 250 years ago!

It was both educating and enlightening to learn about the hotel’s history, founding fathers, location, and natural history.

Luxurious Comfort Nestled in Nature

The accommodation Cellars-Hohenort is a mixture of luxurious comfort, elegance, and sophistication. Whether you’re staying in an entry-level room or a villa, the ambience remains the same throughout. My colleague and I had the opportunity to stay in the Premier Suite and were welcomed with delicious cheese and treat boards and a personalised welcome message. The experience was already off to a good start!

Our room consisted of two floors. We had a kitchenette, a dining and lounge area, and a private terrace with beautiful gardens as a backdrop on the first floor. Our lounge area also has a fireplace which we took advantage of on the chilly night we stayed there. The room also has a complimentary mini-bar and complete tea set for your enjoyment.

On the second floor are the bedroom and bathroom – both quite spacious and beautifully decorated. The bathroom was modern, with a bathtub for a relaxing bubble bath and a large shower to freshen up. The bathroom was also stocked with lovely products for our use and fluffy bathrobes.

Other accommodations offered by the property include double rooms, luxury double rooms with a balcony, suites, premier suites, and villas, ideal for families or groups.

Filled with over 20 gardens in a single property, The Cellars-Hohenort is every nature lover’s dream accommodation. With every step you take and every corner you turn, the lush forest-like gardens grace you with a variety of different landscapes. In all honesty, I found it hard to stop exploring the grounds as there’s so much to see, with the most beautiful variety of flowers, trees, fountains and even some animals such as ducks, squirrels and birds.

At Cellars-Hohenort, you can discover and explore rose gardens, secret passageways and arches, indigenous plants, vineyards and most intriguing, the oldest camphor trees in the country.

To uncover the magic of this nine-acre garden, you can join the regular garden tour conducted by the on-site team. Or, you can adventure a bit further on one of the Constantia Green Belt trails, discovering hidden pathways and spectacular scenery. This well-known magical forest is a great escape from the hustle and bustle of the city and is perfect for some quiet time, an enjoyable picnic, or even to walk down the aisle!

Cellars-Hohenort does not fall short of dining options, with many restaurants, bars and experiences serving the most delicious food and wine.I had the pleasure of dining at the Conservatory. The Conservatory did not disappoint, offering a classic dining experience of simple meals elevated to a sensational menu. This restaurant overlooks all the garden’s glory. Whether you’re on the terrace enjoying a high tea or on a romantic date in the main dining area, the Conservatory has the most breathtaking views – it even has an oak tree encased in the middle of the restaurant, making the setting that much more magical.

The menu caters for almost all palates and dietary requirements. Packed with flavour and beautifully presented, my meal was delicious, and I will definitely return for another taste! Aside from the fantastic food and views, I thoroughly enjoyed the impeccable service and warmth I received from the team. This restaurant is a must.

For a fine dining experience, try the Greenhouse restaurant. The Liz McGrath Collection flagship restaurant is ranked as one of the top 15 restaurants in the country and promises a tasting journey like no other. If you’re looking for a tipple, there are two bars available. At the Martini Bar, guests can enjoy an elegant high tea with a range of coffees and teas or indulge in sophisticated drinks like signature cocktails, excellent wines or a glass of bubbly! Located at the award-winning Greenhouse Restaurant, the Greenhouse Bar also provides various drinks. Here you can enjoy a glass of wine overlooking the Constantia vineyards or sit back and sip a coffee or tea. And yes, they too have signature cocktails to get you in the festive mood!

For the more adventurous, mountain bikes are available for guests interested in exploring the various mountain trails on two wheels. There are two solar-heated pools, both boasting magnificent views of the gardens. Therefore you can take a dip, skip the gym to do a few laps, or relax with a cocktail. I certanly know I’ll be doing the latter during my next visit in summer!

If wellness and relaxation sound right up your alley, you should visit the Fresh Wellness Spa and Hair Salon on the premises. Take the opportunity to unwind and pamper yourself with a signature spa treatment, or pop on over to the hair salon. No one needs to be doing that by themselves on holiday anyway!

Four-Legged Friends are Welcome

Of all the great amenities and services available, this one is near and dear to my heart. The Cellars-Hohenort is pet-friendly. As a dog mom, I take my pooch everywhere I go with me, even on vacation. Travelling with your four-legged friend is an absolute delight, and at Cellars-Hohenort, your dog will be treated as any other human guest and will be able to enjoy the full experience with you and your family.
