The Ultimate Birthday Cake – Starring Charly’s Bakery

August 6, 2013

For Rhino Africa‘s 9th birthday celebration we organised a cake like no other. There was no question which bakery to use… You might have seen them on TV in the show Charly’s Cake Angels, or had a red velvet cupcake wrapped in gold paint splatter, rose petals and gold wired stars delivered to your door in a pink and white striped box.

Yip, Charly’s Bakery is something special…

We asked for a cake shaped like a red rhino and they made us this:

Well, that’s how it began… based on a 70cm x 110cm board. Our Marketing Manager Ross had a slight panic while it looked like a wet sheep. But then it transformed into this work of art:

Our Birthday Cake Our Birthday Cake

We celebrated at the Grand Beach Cafe in Granger Bay, Cape Town, and our rhino cake took centre stage. Our team only managed to get through a quarter of her (female due to the luscious eye lashes of course…). We couldn’t let her go to waste. So we donated this Big Bertha to The Service Dining Rooms (SDR), in Canterbury Street, Cape Town, down the road from our office.

SDR does amazing work in feeding the disadvantaged. Thank you to the proudly Capetonian, family-run Charly’s Bakery and The Service Dining Rooms Operations Manager, Greg Andrews, for your wonderful work and co-operation.

ABOUT The Service Dining Rooms

Founded by Doris Syfret in 1935, The Service Dining Rooms have been serving nourishing meals every weekday to Cape Town’s people for more than 3 generations. “Whatever your circumstances we make sure you won’t go hungry” is their motto and their goal is to ensure that the most vulnerable people and communities in and around Cape Town are fed and cared for on a daily basis. They serve their famous daily 5 cent meal and also source, cook and provide meals, food parcels and food supplies to at-risk communities.

In celebration of our 9th Birthday, we put together this tribute video… Take a look below and for more photos from the Birthday event click here:
