Stellenbosch and Franschhoek

By Craig Harding on November 28, 2007

Stellenbosch is a hive of interesting activities and interests. It is a blend of education with the university and it’s students, the history and old buildings, and buzzing nature like any other South African town with busy streets, shops and taxis! The Protea Dorpshuis is an old hotel located at the bottom of the historical Dorp Street and is surrounded by the busy roads that enter Stellenbosch however you feel you are in the mix of things. The hotel has just recently been taken over by Protea Hotels and the rooms have recently been renovated and now resemble a classy look. The Deluxe rooms have a loft appeal, with lounge, kitchenette and bathroom downstairs and full double bedroom, with en-suite bathroom upstairs. With the new look and old feel of the original building and living area of the hotel, it is a great and central place to stay with a lot of ambience. They are still renovating the gardens surrounding the pool area but when it’s finished, the hotel will be an excellent 4 star hotel that is good value for money. Read more about Stellenbosch.

Le Franschhoek Hotel – this beautiful hotel is located in the valley about a 5 minute drive from the town’s centre. I am not the first staff member from Rhino Africa to visit this great hotel – so I won’t harp too much on it. If you want you can also read Gareth De Jager’s entry on his experience!

The hotel is a flagship property for Three Cities and the service is impeccable. The rooms are beautiful done with a soft and tranquil touch, so you relax the minute you walk into the room! But I won’t hesitate to admit that all the 5 star touches that you would find at the grand hotels are all there. They have world-class restaurants, pool facilities overlooking the vineyards, fully stocked mini bars in the rooms, room service, under-floor heating (a must for the cold winter months), newspaper service delivered to your door in the mornings and the choice of having your breakfast in your room if you feel like it! All these added luxuries are a pleasure and deserved at a great hotel like this one. Read more about Franschhoek
