Magical Botswana

By Craig Harding on December 1, 2007

Botswana!! A place of absolute beauty and splendour. This is my opinion of a country populated by approximately 1.7 million people and a country that has the strongest currency in Africa.

I had the fortune of spending the past 6 days travelling in this country and although it was all for business purposes, we also got a chance to truely experience the best of African hospitality. Now Botswana is not a “Big Five on every corner destination”. It is a more relaxed destination where your main aim is not to see game but to see more of nature as a whole.

As we visited numerous lodges, we all got the task of blogging a lodge or 2 so to cover all that was seen.

My 2 favourite lodges were Xugana Island Lodge in the Okavango Delta and Savuti Safari Lodge in Savuti.

Xugana Island Lodge is a water-based lodge. Situated on an island surrounded by trees, this lodge disappears into nature. 8 rooms with a maximum of 16 guests. You leave the world behind. It is all about you and time is of no concept. Lazy days are made up of lying by the pool, taking in some reading of sipping on a cocktail while watching the sunset. The staff are like your family and your every need is catered to.All activities revolve around water. This is where you can really get up close and personal with a hippo or crocodile. It is also a great bird-watching destination.

Savuti Safari Lodge was my other favourite. Located in the Savuti area of Chobe, this lodge peers out from ancient Camelthorn trees on the banks of the Savute channel, part of the dynamic Savute eco system – known for its large concentration of  Elephant and large lion prides. There are 12 twin bedded chalets and the lodge can accommodate up to 24 people. Many of the rooms overlook the watering hole which is lit at night. The activities at this lodge are all land based so game drives are conducted twice daily.

Travelling to these 2 lodges is easy and there are many ways of doing so. I can give you all the finer details so call or mail me and lets get you there. You will be amazed !!!!
