The Lion Sands Experience

By Craig Harding on June 4, 2008

Lion Sands, the stunningly beautiful 4000 hectare Private Game Reserve lying in the southern part of the World Renowned Sabi Sands Game Reserve, part of the Greater Kruger National Park, is a gem to behold. Consisting of 3 stunning lodges, River Lodge, Ivory Lodge and then new and gorgeous 1933 Lodge – all spaced along the banks of the breath taking Sand River – this privately owned game reserve has something for every one.

River Lodge is the largest of them all, perfect for families and groups or just your individual looking for a luxury experience without the price tag, being the entry level lodge. The perfect place to unwind, let your hair down and just get into the zone of the bushveld, a place that will live in your heart, long after you depart.

Ivory Lodge came along next – if you want to have your breath taken away, this is the place for you, sticking with the Ebony and Ivory colour scheme, it is contemporary in the bush, at it’s best. This is ideal for those looking to escape the madness, with only 6 rooms and the option to never set foot outside your room – if it is privacy you are after, look no further.

1933 is the newest innovative addition to the Lion Sands family. This lodge is custom built for families, it has 4 suites and a child quarters with 6 bunk beds, beautiful and comfortable, 1933 is a home away from home with private chefs and butlers pandering to your every whim, without being invasive.  It has amazing views of the Sand River from the lodge and is the ideal family get away.

Lion Sands is a Big 5 destination amongst much, much more – prolific bird life awaits you here, along with all the smaller game, such as antelope, buck, zebra, giraffe and the list goes on and on. Lion and Leopard sightings are very common as is elephant. Being a Private Game Reserve, the Game Rangers, in open vehicle 4×4 are allowed to go off road, tracking the animals with a dedicated tracker. This enables guests to get very up close and personal with the animals and being 5 meters away from a lion sighting is not uncommon. The game viewing in short, is spectacular and in a 2 night stay, you are 90% certain to see the whole Big 5, plus 100% certain of seeing and experiencing much, much more. All this is exclusive and a private experience where you will not be disturbed by masses of other people, enabling you to soak up the experience in peace and tranquility, as it should be………

Owned and operated by the More Family, this piece of land is steeped in history dating back to the early 1900’s. The food is fantastic, with a full spread for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Many special treats are around each corner, from surprise bush lunches, boma dinners and private dining in special and secret locations. Bush walks are available for the less faint at heart and game drives are taken in the morning and the evening in an open vehicle 4×4 with a dedicated ranger and tracker to guide you all the way – sparking your imagination with tales of the wild and factual information about animals, plants and birds. After a night drive, your Game Ranger will astound you with his knowledge of the stars and solar system we reside in – a view that seems almost touchable as the sky is so bright in the darkness of the bush. Star gazing is a very special experience in this part of the world, with no lights for miles, every star is visible. Further to all this, you have the option of staying out alone in the luxury Chalkley Tree House is something very special, lie in your bed, gazing at the stars and listening to the sounds of the night…….

So, for the ultimate bush experience and getaway, look no further than Lion Sands, where the friendly staff will dote on you from the time you arrive to the time you depart – you will hug your new friends goodbye as you leave the lodge, wishing you could stay just one more day – this amazing and wonderful land will be etched in your memory forever, so much so, that you will be certain to return should time allow in your future endeavours………..
