Not so long ago a few Rhino Africans undertook a Wednesday mission to the wonderful Summerwood Guesthouse in Stellenbosch. Here we enjoyed a tasty lunch, a look around the various rooms, good conversation, a little wine and the fine company of our hosts. So enamoured was I with this fine establishment, that I went back, this time around I barely managed to tear myself away!
My significant other and I were lucky enough to spend most of the past weekend at Summerwood. We got to pick our room, but once we saw room eight, our minds where made up. On the very top floor, with windows on all four sides the room has views of the garden, the Helderberg mountains and of the town. All the rooms at Summerwood are well appointed and comfortable, but if you have the choice, pick room eight! Then there is the garden, it is amazing. Lush green trees, manicured lawns and sculpted bushes, bright flowers and a sparkling blue pool all add up to make a perfectly relaxing atmosphere.
There are several things that make Summerwood special and make it the deserved winner of so many awards, including 2008 Guesthouse of the year. For me the main reason it deserves the credit is because of the wonderful Summerwood team. From the moment we stepped out of the car we where made to feel right at home. Warm smiles, a willingness to help and some great advice on where to eat, where to go wine-tasting and what to see in Stellenbosch followed. Friday night we ate at The Fishmonger, which had a great vibe and good food (even sushi) and on Saturday night, since it was a special day, we ate at the immpressive Umami restuarant, which serves up some truly amazing culinary creations. We also visited some great wineries, the highlight being Uvamira, which makes a particularly smooth Sauvignon Blanc!
If you are looking for a relaxing home away from home and don’t mind missing out on flat screen televisions and uncomfortable designer furniture, then Summerwood is for you. If your idea of the perfect weekend includes catnapping in the shade of an ancient Leadwood tree while butterflies play around you and the scents of flowers mingle in the air, then Summerwood is for you. If you want to explore the Stellenbosch wineroute and sample some of the town’s gourmet fare, then Summerwood is for you. It certainly is the place for me and I will be going back.. again!
