I enjoy many of my favourite indulgences on the rocks…a delicious after dinner liqueur, a fine single malt whiskey and when I’m feeling adventurous even a slowly aged tequila! However, my favourite new addition to this list doesn’t need time to mature to its full potential – Tintswalo Atlantic is literally on the rocks at the foot of Chapman’s Peak; where Cape Mountain Reserve meets Atlantic Ocean in the gorgeous surrounds of Hout Bay.
We were invited for a sneak preview of this gorgeous 10 suite hotel in September; while Cape Town was being harassed by endless rain. But on this particular day, the clouds parted and we got a glimpse of the summer to come as we made our way from Cape Town centre along the beautiful coastal route to Republic of Hout Bay. The journey took only 25 minutes but it is always best to factor in traffic along that route in peak season! We headed through the fishing town of Hout Bay and onto Chapman’s Peak – a few bends and turns (approx 800m) and we arrived at the hidden entrance to Tintswalo Atlantic – the pearly shell sign the only indication that there is a lodge hidden here in the Cape Mountain Reserve.
Luckily there was no need for us to negotiate the steep winding drive down to reception, instead we parked our cars at the gate and were collected in style by Melissa in one of the hotel’s swanky vehicles – the perfect way to kick back, take in the views over the Bay and arrive at the hotel doors in style! Being built in the Cape Mountain Reserve – space was limited and the vegetation guarded by strict regulations. No problem for Gaye & Earnest, they simply had Tintswalo designed around the hundreds of years old Milkwood Trees!
We were greeted by simple earth coloured structures adorned in shell murals. I love that I could barely notice the buildings between the trees, the spotlight is on the pure and natural surroundings, and not big flashy exteriors. Once we stepped inside however, I was blown away! Bold yet comfortable décor is illuminated by the natural light streaming through large windows overlooking the Bay. We were torn between staring at the unique décor pieces and gazing at the Whale lulling about in the Bay directly in front of us.
After a delicious glass of bubbly, and inspecting their amazing wine collection – we made our way along the wooden pathway to the 10 luxurious island suites. Each is fashioned to capture the spirit of 10 different islands from around the world. The layouts of each suite is identical – spacious bedrooms with large glass fronts, allow you to enjoy the view from the comfort of your bed, from your private deck or even while you are in the tub or shower.
When it came to choosing our favourite island suite, the decision was tough…I’m quite partial to Cousine and Robben Island and of course who wouldn’t fall in love with the Presidential Suite. Perched slightly higher the side of the mountain with amazing views, the Presidential actually consists of two island suites, Elba and Corsica; and a central lounge so perfect for families or friends travelling together!
Tintswalo comes with all the amenities you would expect of a luxurious hotel, except for TV signal due to their secluded location, which in my opinion is perfect – who wants to watch TV when you have that view!
We slowly made our way back to the main lodge sad to be leaving this magical place, only to be greeted by the entire management team and a surprise lunch from Exec Chef Ryno du Rand. Another clever design – the kitchen is completely open plan, so we could pull up a chair at the counter and chat to Ryno and his team while they prepared our 3 course feast before settling down to our table. The glass doors were pushed back to allow the sea breeze to waft through while we enjoyed lunch and the company of the Tintswalo team. The sun was shining, delicious wine was flowing, and the 3 course lunch was…well quite simply sublime! What more could we ask for?
Sadly that time came… as it always does, for us to head back to Cape Town and reality, but we did so relaxed and satisfied after a very memorable afternoon on the rocks!
