The Good Work Foundation – Reinventing Learning in Rural Communities

Imagine… we change the education landscape in rural South Africa forever

This weekend we were privileged to visit the Good Work Foundation (GWF). The GWF is one of the carefully selected charities supported by Rhino Africa Safaris.

We visited the Digital Learning Centre in Hazyview. The Hazyview Centre is essentially the headquarters of the GWF. It’s the blueprint for future learning centres across the country and eventually, it is hoped that it will be a blueprint for rural learning around the World.

THEIR OBJECTIVE: To uplift rural communities through access to world class education. But it’s not just traditional education – it’s about practical education for a new generation of social entrepreneurs. Education through digital empowerment. It was truly inspiring to see kids from tiny rural villages learning on iPads and working through an Excel spreadsheet with a proficiency that put me to shame. And it’s not just for children. Students vary in age from 8 to 74.

Remarkable and inspiring stories are at the very heart of the GWF. One lady we met had helped build the Hazyview Digital Learning Centre. She had subsequently studied there and is now working there providing for her family.

We’re working closely this year with the GWF to turn their remarkable aspirations into reality. So watch this space. There’s a new website coming soon and by the end of the year we’re hoping that the Hazyview project will be more like a University campus than a learning centre and that further development of the numerous satellite learning centres will be well underway.

Imagine…

That we could reinvent learning in rural South Africa.
That we could harness to the full, the advances being made in information technology.
That we could enable a learning centre in every town and village in South Africa.
That we could provide internet access to every rural child in South Africa.
