15 Reasons Why An African Honeymoon Is The Best Way To Start Your Marriage

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the word ‘honeymoon’ comes from “the idea that the first month of marriage is the sweetest.” And it’s made even sweeter by going on a romantic holiday after the wedding, a practice that was initially called a ‘bridal tour’ and originated in 19th century Great Britain.

Nowadays, it’s as popular as ever with couples jetting off to romantic cities and exotic islands all over the world after their weddings when, as Samuel Johnson said, “there is nothing but tenderness and pleasure.”

African destinations are quickly becoming more and more popular for honeymoons. Whether it’s a safari, an island holiday, or a coastal road trip, African honeymoons deliver the goods. This is why;

1. The privacy

Safari lodges boast complete privacy, often with their own deck and, best of all, a private plunge pool. They’re the perfect place for a late-night drink. Candle-lit dinners in your room or under the stars can also easily be arranged and, if you’d like, you can even have your own vehicle and ranger.

2. Safari lodges are honeymoon experts

Lodges are adept at catering for couples. They specialise in the small, thoughtful touches that make a holiday memorable. Rose petals, foam baths, chocolates, wine, and specially-crafted meals await you and your new spouse.

3. There’s no aphrodisiac quite like the African bush.

Your inner beast will be released.

4. The diversity

Choose between stunning wine country, postcard perfect beaches, vibrant cities and world-class safaris. Actually, don’t choose. You can do it all. A mix of bush and beach is a very popular honeymoon choice. You can combine the thrill of the wildlife with the calm of the ocean for the perfect honeymoon.

5. All those islands!

Actually, the Indian Ocean Islands deserve their own mention. We’re talking paradise here, people! Glorious, glorious paradise. Check out our guide to the Indian Ocean Islands such as Maldives, Zanzibar and Mauritius.

6. The excitement

A honeymoon is the first adventure you have as a married couple so starting off in an exciting manner will set a wonderful tone for your marriage. Nothing compares to the thrill of seeing a stalking lion or a close encounter with a large herd of elephants. And that’s a beautiful experience to share together.

7. Hot-air balloons

There’s nothing quite as uplifting as a hot-air balloon. Ladies, it’s so romantic that the balloon won’t be the only thing rising.

8. The novelty

Paris, Venice, and the Bahamas is so last century. Go somewhere special that reflects the uniqueness of your own relationship.

9. The food

Honeymoons are all about indulging in sensual delights and Africa’s chefs certainly deliver with their cuisine. Safari lodges serve up amazing food and places like Cape Town and Franschhoek boast some of the best restaurants in the world.Imagine this kind of privacy for dinner

10. The sunsets, stars, and moon

The cliche is true! You’ll never see sunsets like you do in Africa. Not only that but the stars seem brighter and the moon seems bigger, making those special moments even more romantic.

11. Marvel at the loving animals that mate for life (just like you, hopefully)

Like badgers, penguins, eagles and vultures. As one can be seen by these two loving lions above, romance is in the air in the African bush.

12. Pamper yourself at the spa

Relax, rejuvenate, breathe. Weddings can take their toll. The honeymoon can be the light at the end of the tunnel. The soft, luscious, wonderfully relaxing light. A couples’ massage can get you in the holiday mood in no time.

13. It’s a great place for adventure

The trend of doing something different and unique on your honeymoon is on the rise and you can get a taste of adventure on an African honeymoon. From skydiving to paragliding to Devil’s Pool (below), Africa has it covered.

14. Africa can broaden your perspective

This milestone moment doesn’t have to just be buffets, cocktails, and romantic dinners (although it can be if you want). An African honeymoon can double up as a cultural trip too. You can meet fantastic people, see new landscapes, have new experiences, and immerse yourself in new cultures.

15. Makes for great photos

Nobody wants to see another photo of the Eiffel Tower. Get that elephant selfie for something different.
