The journey to Ellerman House is a winding tour of Kloof Nek, the perfect vantage from where Camps Bay, one of the most beautiful beaches in Africa and Robben Island can be viewed. Somehow hidden above and over this heel is a stately haven that, at first glance, is a palatial private home.
When you explore the interior at Ellerman House you quickly find that this assumption is not that far off the mark. This is a place where people retreat to feel at home. Understated and inconspicuous, it is perfect for those seeking privacy, warmth and familiarity.
Ellerman House is a boutique hotel with a selection of tastefully decorated rooms and two modern villas. It is artfully concealed within a line of beautiful houses at the top of the exclusive Bantry Bay neighbourhood.
Each year, this retreat draws a loyal set of visitors who yearn for exclusivity and easy access to Cape Town attractions. Almost around the corner are Clifton’s four beaches, Table Mountain, shopping centres and access to the best day trips and tours in Cape Town.
And where do guests refresh after these exploits? In their choice of 11 individually decorated rooms and suites, of course.
We recently got the chance to explore these interiors, to experience for ourselves the comfort that drew Ellerman House’s loyal clientele time after time. What we discovered was not a conventional yet fancy hotel but a sanctuary where everything, from the service to the decor, is personal.
DELUXE HOUSE ROOM
There are seven of these refined rooms which are uniquely decorated in a classic and tasteful manner. Each has two sets of double doors opening up to a private terrace overlooking the indigenous garden. The atmosphere created is one of intimacy and freedom where guests can roam the grounds – as one would their own home – to pick up a book (from the in-house library) or a treat (from the pantry) and find somewhere inviting to lounge at all hours of the day.
SUPERIOR HOUSE ROOM
Throughout the property a common idea sustains – that each room might’ve been personally decorated by a sophisticated, loving owner with a discerning eye. This is evident in the superior room, a crisp space that, without enjoying a terrace, is decorated and positioned in such a way that a constant stream of light washes over it from the sea-facing windows.
DELUXE SPA ROOM
Each of the 2 spa rooms, which are adjacent to Ellerman House Spa, is styled to invoke the pristine tranquility of its surroundings. Each has double sliding wooden doors that open to a shared deck and infinity pool, creating a ‘remote island paradise’ atmosphere.
ELLERMAN HOUSE SUITES
Each of these two suites has unparalleled sea views that can be enjoyed from a private terrace and a separate lounge and dining area. The soft hues that dominate and the premium fabrics used prioritise serenity and an accessibility rarely found in a hotel setting.
VILLA ONE
For the more cosmopolitan traveller this multistorey villa, complete with contemporary architectural design, perfectly merges extravagance and leisure. With a private lounge, entertainment room, dining room, kitchen, library, study, elevator and private deck and pool, it provides every convenience a jetsetter would need to feel indulged and yet at home.
VILLA TWO
Offering the same comfort and luxury as villa one, this three-bedroom villa has a delightful open plan living room from where panoramic views of the sea and night sky can be viewed. A dining room, kitchen and private cinema also make this the ideal base for guests who enjoy entertaining.
