Journey to the misty land of Rwanda where you’ll find volcanic mountains, gorilla trekking and rainforest expeditions, all while staying in utter comfort with an assortment of breathtaking accommodation. Most of the wildlife here are endemic to the regions where they are found and the only other place where mountain gorillas can be seen is in Uganda while the western lowland gorilla is indigenous to the Congo. We’ve compiled a lookbook below to showcase just how special this country and its inhabitants are.

Forest Fauna & Flora

The greatest draw for visitors to Rwanda must be the mountain gorillas. Navigate through Volcanoes National Park which is also a haven for golden monkeys and smaller creatures such as three-horned chameleons. Hiking here through the canopy is a striking experience and other interesting attractions include traces of Diane Fossey’s conservation and research efforts in the area.

The other option is Nyungwe Forest National Park, a magical rainforest buzzing with birds, butterflies and orchids. Primates that swing through here include the Angolan colobus monkey as well as chimpanzees that populate the trees. An interesting activity to do is an East African canopy walk which spectacularly frames the expanses of vegetation.

Volcanic Lakes & Mountains

Venture on a journey away from the forests to Lake Kivu, a freshwater lake found along the Albertine Rift Valley. You are also invited for a tour with local guides through the tea plantations while hiking expeditions meander along the volcanoes which provide a home for a myriad of birds and insects.

Akagera National Park is Central Africa’s largest protected wetland and has recently introduced eastern black rhinos, lions, Vervet monkeys and olive baboons. The park is made up of a myriad biomes where you can fish, go on night drives and engage in cultural experiences. When you head out for a day of trekking, you’ll find yourself immersed in the sights and sounds for hours on end. Pass by villages that exist on the edges of the forest and discover magnificent colours in the form of fruits on the forest floor and birds like the great blue turaco as well as the black-headed gonolek.

The lodges here are like any other luxury accommodation found on Rhino Africa’s tours except for their astounding positioning within the wilderness. Some are settled deep within the mountains while others have picturesque views of the valleys below or can be found right on the edge of the forests. Absorb a tranquil atmosphere, indulge in fine dining and connect with local culture on a selection of community activities.
