An evening at Rosendal

By Craig Harding on June 2, 2008

A glass of fine red wine fireside, a cosy antique armchair and a shaggy dog at my feet. I was transported back in time. A time of tranquil days and restful nights, a time of pioneers, settlers and farmsteads. Situated in the heart of Route 62 is the town of Robertson and there Rosendal Winery and Wellness Retreat was my time machine – and a stylish one at that.

This renovated homestead, with its yellowwood ceilings, stone fireplaces and authentic furniture oozes colonial style. Surrounded by immaculate gardens and with extensive views of magnificent mountains, the setting too is tranquil and restive. The rooms are decked out in the same classic style, although I found sleeping in a four poster bed can be a little daunting. Each of the eight rooms overlooks the vineyards, ponds and picturesque garden.

The food on offer was warm hearty and tasty with a cordon bleu touch and complemented by a good selection of wines all served in the cosy dining room. Also on offer is a full range of spa and beauty treatments, my most difficult choice being between a Swedish or Stress-reducing massage.

Back to the present, I can only wish to be back in that peaceful beautiful place where time slows and the hours are filled with rest and relaxation.
