A Pachyderm Safari

By Craig Harding on August 19, 2008

Forget four wheel drive vehicles, diff lock and off-road tyres, what you really need to travel through the African bush is two pairs of hard as nails feet, a massive great grey bulk, toughened hide, bush clearing tusks and a dexterous trunk. The current model elephant hasn’t changed much in a few thousand years, mostly because when a design is pretty much perfect there is no sense messing with it. Unfortunately the engine can be a bit tempremental and doesn’t take well to new owners. You could still pick one up at a used zoo sale, a defunct circus auction or from a shady dealer down an New Delhi side street. However by far the easiest way to enjoy the ultimate in safari travel is to head to Wild Horizons Elephant Back safari’s near Victoria Falls!

The Wild Horizons elephant herd has just completed a major move from their old location to their new home in the Wild Horizons Wildlife Sanctuary and Orphanage concession in the Victoria Falls National Park. The move took tons of planning (pun intended) and months of hard work and was completed on the 20th of July. The herd was split into two and the first made the 20 kilometre trek to their new home on Sunday the 13th of July, with a few hiccups provided by a passing train. The second herd took the distance in their collective stride and the only hiccup was a wild bull following behind. Later it turned out Miz Ele, one of the tame herd, was on heat and the wild bull had only one thing on his mind. He fooled the gate guard into letting him into the new camp by posing as.. well as an elephant!

The great thing about the elephants new home is that it is a mere ten minutes from Victoria Falls town. Which means that your ultimate safari vehicle is only a short hop away when you are staying anywhere in the Victoria Falls area. Don’t miss out on your chance to test drive a pachyderm today!

You can book not only your trip to Victoria Falls through RhinoAfrica, but you can also pre-book your elephant back safari as part of your trip. Contact us about planning the perfect Victoria Falls getaway!
