Winter Warmers – Our Top 5 Cape Town Pubs!

July 1, 2013

Being a Brit, I’m accustomed to a good pub on every corner for my scampi fries and pork crackling. Cape Town is now in the clutches of winter. Gone are the days of Piña Coladas in Camps Bay. This is the season for huddling up with a with a bottle of Meerlust Rubicon aside the fireplace while the British Lions battle it out against the Aussies…

Cape Town has some great spots to do just that…

The Odyssey

This is Cape Town’s first gastropub – a hearty fusion of restaurant and pub that delivers a gourmet experience in a relaxed and vibey setting. The building used to be French Toast, but is far more at ease with itself as a gastropub. Lorenzo Magni (the owner of Blues in Camps Bay) started this welcome addition to Bree Street, where ethically produced, home-grown and locally-sourced food are the order of the day. From Cabernet Sauvignon Beef Bourguignon to Roast Beetroot and Red Onion Tart, this is a great spot to warm the winter cockles. Looking for somewhere to watch the rugby? A large HD TV is there to screen any game. And if sport isn’t your thing The Odyssey hosts live music once a week.

The Fireman’s Arms

This is a classic sports bar. Memorabilia from South African sports history hangs from every wall and the ceiling. 9 46” flat screen TVs ensure you can see the games from any angle. Make sure you arrive early on big sports nights as The Fireman’s Arms is a favourite spot for many Capetonians looking to support their team. And be warned…the chilli poppers will make steam come out of your ears!

Foresters Arms

Known as Forries to locals, this pub and restaurant is one of the oldest pubs in South Africa. Situated close to Newlands rugby and cricket grounds, it is the perfect venue to visit before and after games or to enjoy the game on one of the many TVs.  From a fine whiskey bar to a wood-fired pizza oven, this is no ordinary pub – there’s even a smoked salmon and crème fraiche pizza! And don’t forget about their Sunday Carvery.

&Union

&Union is the home of craft beer and live music. Built as a shrine to their house beer, guests can enjoy their refreshments on long wooden tables. And if you get restless why not have a quick game of table tennis. And what goes with beer? Food. Artisan cured meats, organic produce and beer-inspired dishes all feature on the menu including their signature prego roll and a delicious pulled pork sandwich. Join the team for a complementary wine tasting every Tuesday and Thursday at 6pm – just remember to book!

Ferryman’s Tavern

Open since 1989, Ferryman’s is a much loved spot for locals and visitors alike. It is always busy with gathered friends and cheering sports fans enjoying views of Table Mountain and the extensive selection of beers from all over the world. South African specialties such as Swordfish, Ostrich stew and Tomato Bredie are favourites as well as their traditional fish and chips or chicken pie dishes. With a collection of old prints and photographs of Cape Town, this is a true piece of Cape history.
