The Twelve Apostles Hotel & Spa Wellness Experience: A must-do spa day in Cape Town

Overlooking the enthralling waters of the Atlantic Ocean and its grounds abutting the slopes of the Twelve Apostles mountain range, The Twelve Apostles Hotel is a Cape Town bucket list item based on its location alone, but this certainly isn’t the only reason you should stop by this award-winning hotel.

Here’s a taste of how you’ll be treated if you indulge yourself with a Twelve Apostles Hotel & Spa Wellness Experience.

Driving from Cape Town’s City Bowl and along it’s Atlantic Seaboard, the hotel stands out like a sprawling Parthenon against the imposing mountain range which forms its backdrop. All white, with columns and a geometric aesthetic to boot, this seaside retreat seems a world away from the bustle of the city, despite its convenient proximity to the trendy suburb of Camps Bay.

The Spa at the Twelve Apostles Hotel is legendary. If you haven’t been yourself, chances are you’ve heard of it. After a short drive up the hotel’s winding driveway, its entranceway is decidedly deceiving: two very simple glass doors and a sign indicating you’re in the right place.

Enjoy the magic of a consistent, award-winning, five-star wellness retreat

When entering, it’s clear that all the magic really does happen behind closed doors. The room you enter into is just the reception and a long passageway extends in the direction of the mountain behind the hotel. It takes you into a serenely lit, subdued, and peaceful oasis.

The health bar offers a range of delicious treats. Healthy and nutritious crunchies, freshly cut fruit, other finger foods and fruit juices. This is the waiting room, and you’ll find it hard to want to leave.

The plush seating area is as comfortable as it looks, as you relax for a moment before your treatment starts. It leaves you the perfect amount of time to grab a bite to eat or glass of water. The mesmerising mural running the length of the seating alcove depicts an enchanting scene of life beneath the ocean and on our shores. It is a perfect reflection of the dual space that the Twelve Apostles Hotel occupies.

A set of state-of-the-art wellness facilities

A passageway leads to seven treatment rooms in one direction, while a staircase descends into the cave below, with hydrotherapy pools and a tranquility lounge. This lounge can be used to relax between, before or after treatments. The hotel’s wellness facilities also include a nail bar, Rasul room and rain shower for patrons to make use of. The pièce de résistance? Two mountain gazebos perfect for outdoor massages, overlooking, and being serenaded by, the sounds of the ocean.

Many wellness options are available in the Hotel’s Spa

When I looked at their Spa Treatment menu beforehand, I was floored by the number of treatments on offer. Would it be the Aromatherapy Massage? Or the Himalayan Salt Stone Massage? In the end, I went with the B | Harmonised treatment. This treatment is perfectly designed to target areas of the body that hold tension and stress. My spa therapist chatted to me about the treatment beforehand. My therapist explained to me what it involved and asked me about my medical history and asking if I had any injuries she should know about.

Then, the magic began. First, a foot scrub (diligently washed away with towels rather than water because of Cape Town’s water crisis). Then, a full body massage that lasted an hour but which could have gone on longer as far as I was concerned. I came out of my treatment with a slow start after I’d dozed off under the skillful hands of my therapist.

Will I be back? Most definitely.

Any regrets? Only that I didn’t stay longer.
