Travel is well and truly back! We’re excited to share Africa’s treasures with tourists again, and the summer season is close to being in full swing. For those able to slip away on short notice and those who want a slightly more exclusive experience, African travel in November is the perfect way to enjoy some of the best destinations on the continent.
So, without further ado, here are our top destinations and places to stay for African travel in November.
1. Rwanda, East Africa
Every African adventurer should travel to see the gorillas once in their lifetime. And there is nowhere better to visit them than the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. Home to over half of the mountain gorillas on Earth, this is, without doubt, the best destination to get up close to these fascinating primates.
Conditions for Gorilla Trekking are excellent between December and February and again between June and September. Annual rainfall in the time between these months makes Gorilla Trekking significantly more challenging.
Our favourite property: One&Only Gorilla’s Nest
Settled in the foothills of the magnificent Volcanoes National Park, One&Only Gorilla’s Nest provides enriching experiences and enchanting escapes; immersed in raw, Rwandan beauty that awakes a wild spirit of adventure.
Wander through lush forests, traverse magical landscapes and ascend epic volcanoes. Savour a once-in-a-lifetime encounter with majestic mountain gorillas roaming free in their own natural habitat. Discover intriguing species of plants, playful Golden Monkeys and a wealth of exotic birds. You could even enjoy heart-warming interactions with local people as you discover their unique way of life. After a fruitful day, return to One&Only comforts and relish a refreshing dip in the sparkling infinity pool, sample fresh cuisine crafted and inspired by local seasonal produce, or take time to pause at the peaceful spa.
2. Pemba Island, Zanzibar
If you want to experience the magic of Zanzibar, away from the crowds, Pemba is perfect for you. More of a hidden gem than its neighbour, the vastly popular Stone Town, Pemba offers an authentic and serene coastal environment. Long stretches of quiet coastline and the Ngezi forest create a place where you’ll find all the peace in the world.
Our favourite property: Fundu Lagoon Resort
Our favourite property: Mont Rochelle
The roots of Mont Rochelle are part and parcel of the very origins of Franschhoek itself. In the early 18th century, it began as a farm owned by one of the original Huguenots who ventured into the valley 30 years before.
Guests at Mont Rochelle can make the most of an array of on-site luxuries include two restaurants, a bar, spa, gym, heated outdoor pool and wine cellar. With an eye for detail and a penchant for luxury, Richard Branson’s Winelands retreat will have guests coming back over and over again.
3. Skeleton Coast, Namibia
This park’s ominous name comes from the trade routes along Namibia’s coastline. Hindered by sea fog prevalent off the coast, many ships were wrecked creating a ship graveyard along the shore. Today it is a favourite of photographers & nature-lovers alike.
Desert-adapted wildlife and excellent fishing opportunities add to the appeal of this other-worldly destination.
Our favourite property: &Beyond Sossusvlei Desert Lodge
&Beyond’s Sossusvlei Desert Lodge has an almost surreal quality against the backdrop of the spectacular Namib Desert. With wilderness stretching out in every direction, the sense of isolation from the outside world is instant and intense.
Exploring this land and its hardy inhabitants is an experience unlike any other. Zebra, springbok, jackal and gemsbok are just some of the many fascinating creatures you may encounter during a scenic drive or nature walk. Marked hiking trails are a popular activity, as is the high-speed adrenaline rush of quad-biking across the surrounding dunes.
4. Cape Town, South Africa
Africa’s most cosmopolitan city, Cape Town, is where jet-setting travellers and adventure seekers come together. Filled with a diverse range of attractions and activities, there is little wonder that it consistently tops the world’s “best city” awards.
Cape Town is also our home city, so we might be a little biased, but we wouldn’t want to be anywhere else! The history, culture, wine, penguins, beaches and iconic mountains attract thousands of visitors from all over the world every year. But most importantly, once you visit Cape Town for the first time, you’ll always long to return to this beautiful city.
Our favourite property: Ellerman House
Tucked quietly within one of Cape Town’s most exclusive suburbs, Ellerman House is the perfect luxury haven for the discerning traveller. Imagine waking up to extraordinary views of the Atlantic Ocean and Robben Island, in a place where no convenience is spared. This boutique hotel is on par with the finest in the world, thanks in part to its famous private cellar and impressive art collection.
