Osaka, Japan – a city of contrasts, where futuristic skyscrapers sit alongside historic shrines, where the energy of neon lights meets the tranquillity of traditional tea ceremonies. It was here, amid Osaka’s electric pulse, that Rhino Africa marked its presence at the 2024 IGLTA Global Convention. Representing Rhino Africa, Luke Lalin and Dawid Minnie arrived on the 23rd of October, joining a dynamic gathering of tourism professionals, each dedicated to building a travel industry that not only welcomes but celebrates LGBTQ+ travellers.

IGLTA and the Power of Presence

For the uninitiated, the International LGBTQ+ Travel Association (IGLTA) is the global authority in advancing LGBTQ+ travel. With members in over 80 countries, IGLTA connects LGBTQ+ travellers with destinations, accommodations, and experiences that prioritise inclusivity and safety.

And what is the annual IGLTA Global Convention? It’s a space where movers and shakers in tourism gather to network, learn, and set the tone for what LGBTQ+ travel can and should be. This year, the 40th IGLTA Global Convention brought hundreds of professionals together in Osaka, marking the largest gathering outside North America in the organisation's history.

“It has been amazing to see the different events throughout the world with IGLTA. This was the first convention in Asia and was a huge success." – Luke.

Luke and Dawid embraced this high-energy gathering, diving into back-to-back sessions and networking events alongside global tourism leaders. Their mission? To bring home innovative ideas, partnerships, and a shared sense of purpose that would advance Rhino Africa’s goal of enhancing LGBTQ+ travel on the continent – a mission at the very heart of Rhino Africa’s values.

“Having attended the convention over the past years, it’s clear that Rhino Africa has made its mark. There’s a genuine interest in what we do, which is both inspiring and motivating.” – Dawid.

Japan Meets Africa’s Leading Safari Brand

Recently named Japan’s friendliest city, Osaka was the ideal location for this year’s convention. Known for its welcoming spirit and vibrant LGBTQ+ community, Osaka embraced IGLTA delegates with open arms.

As Luke and Dawid explored the city, they witnessed this inclusivity first-hand – Pride flags outside restaurants, rainbow-themed posters for Osaka’s upcoming Pride event, and warmth from locals that made them feel right at home.

Wandering through bustling streets filled with the scent of takoyaki sizzling at street stalls and the fragrance of incense from nearby temples, they experienced Osaka’s hospitality and tradition firsthand – a sensory symphony that added depth to the convention experience.

“Osaka is a truly inclusive city… Pride flags outside restaurants, branding from the concurrent Gay Pride event visible throughout the city. It felt like a celebration of acceptance and community.” – Dawid.

Inside the convention itself, opportunities for meaningful collaboration were abundant. The Buyer/Supplier Marketplace was particularly exciting, with 88 pre-qualified buyers representing over US$686.5 million in purchasing power meeting with suppliers.

Here, Luke and Dawid saw how simple introductions over plates of takoyaki could evolve into partnerships that advance Rhino Africa’s commitment to creating an Africa that’s not only open to LGBTQ+ travellers but actively welcoming.

“Being hosted in Japan was very special. The people are so kind, gentle and welcoming, and thus this convention felt like a loving and familial one which was amazing.” – Luke.

Moments of Inspiration and Impact

Among the convention's standout moments, Luke and Dawid were especially moved by a groundbreaking panel discussion highlighting LGBTQ+ travel companies from the Asian region. With representatives from India, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and Nepal, this discussion shed light on both the immense challenges and inspiring achievements of LGBTQ+ advocates across Asia.

“The discussion was focused on highlighting LGBTQ+ travel companies in the Asia region… It was inspiring and the first of its kind for an IGLTA convention, which was very special.” – Luke.

An unforgettable moment unfolded when First Nature Tours, led by its founder Kieron Wilde, proudly received the IGLTA Foundation Impact Award. Wilde, renowned for his visionary work in regenerative travel, delivered an inspiring speech that highlighted his commitment to sustainability and community upliftment – a commitment that deeply resonated with both Luke and Dawid.

“As pioneers in regenerative travel, they lead with sustainability at the forefront, aiming to leave positive environmental impacts while supporting local communities. This mission aligns closely with our own values here at Rhino Africa.” – Dawid.

Luke and Dawid also participated in a profoundly grounding event: a guided meditation held within an ancient temple as part of IGLTA’s Voyage event. Surrounded by the delicate scent of incense and the historic hum of ancient walls, the silent meditation became a moment of quiet reflection – a reminder of travel’s true power to connect, inspire, and heal.

“Luke and I had the privilege of attending a guided meditation and silent event in a historic temple. It was a powerful and grounding experience.” – Dawid.

For them, this journey to Osaka was not simply a professional event; it was an invitation to be part of a global movement. Standing shoulder-to-shoulder with leaders in LGBTQ+ tourism, they affirmed that Rhino Africa is not only part of the conversation but is driving it forward.

“The biggest learning for me from this convention is that travel really does provide the opportunity to grow and learn. Japanese culture is centred around community… It was incredible to be a part of this convention and to get a small glimpse into why bringing people to Africa is truly life-changing.” – Luke.
