AI in African Travel: Where Innovation Meets Human Expertise

By Toast Seagers on January 31, 2025

As someone who currently spends their free time soldering wires, 3D printing, training Artificial Intelligence (AI) to identify animals from wildlife webcams (yes, really!), and having in-depth existential discussions with Gemini and ChatGPT, I'm passionate about the potential of technology to transform the way we experience the world, uplift each other, and live in general. So, here’s my take on AI in African travel and how innovation will blend with human expertise...

Rhino Africa’s Digital-First Approach

At Rhino Africa, we've always believed that technology can unlock extraordinary travel experiences. This digital-first approach has been a vital vein in Rhino’s ethos over the last 20 years, where we've embraced innovative tools to connect people with the magic of Africa, make experiential travel easily accessible to anyone from anywhere in the world and empower local communities.

Whether it's harnessing the power of our sales CRM tools to streamline our booking process, to gain deeper insights into what our guests want, or partnering with Felix Studios to capture the continent's beauty through cutting-edge videography, our commitment to technology is woven into the very fabric of our company.

This commitment extends to our support of the Good Work Foundation and its six digital learning centres, where we're helping to bridge the digital divide and create opportunities for future generations.

AI is a Partner, Not a Replacement

AI, the buzzword in tech at the moment, is fast becoming a part of our everyday lives, and it’s becoming quite clear that it will become as native to us as the Internet and mobile phones are now.

This is very relevant in the travel industry, and AI tools are already being used very successfully by airlines and large hotel groups to provide price predictions, smart booking systems, route optimisations, and predictive occupancy management.

The current and potential benefits are huge, and we’re already seeing immense value in using AI to analyse large amounts of data about what our guests want. It’s now possible to get immediate insights that would have taken days or weeks to get in the past.

The Downside of AI

While AI excels at processing vast amounts of data to provide useful insights, it has limitations, especially when it comes to the often unpredictable nature of African travel. In this context, firsthand knowledge of lodges, logistics, and local conditions is crucial for crafting smooth itineraries. AI lacks emotional intelligence, complex problem-solving skills, cultural understanding, and risk assessment abilities. Quite importantly, it cannot be held personally accountable.

Our Travel Experts are irreplaceable in this regard. In our team, we have a continent-wide lake of experience. They travel regularly to the properties and destinations we send our guests to, and they’re truly experts in what they recommend. They turn the process of trip planning into a creative and fulfilling experience. Furthermore, they understand how important an often once-in-a-lifetime trip to Africa is for our guests, and this emotional intelligence helps them create a trip that is just for you.

Building Human Connections

Many of our past guests have become friends. Having moved to a different team a few years ago, I’ve not been directly involved in planning trips for a while now, but there are many past guests with whom I’m still in touch regularly. Once, a couple even named their dog after me!

It’s these uniquely human connections that make all the difference between an average trip and a life-changing one. Our consultants' expertise extends beyond the initial planning stages; they remain accessible throughout your journey, ready to address unexpected changes and provide unique and creative solutions to unforeseen challenges. This level of personalised service is simply unattainable for AI.

Rhino Revolution

The real revolution begins when we merge the skills of our exceptional human Travel Experts with AI tools that take away some of the routine tasks like language translations, cost calculations, document organisation and keeping up with the complexities of visa requirements and instead free them up to focus on relationship building and complex itinerary and experience curation.

AI technology is developing quickly, really quickly, and the travel industry is undergoing a rapid transformation – not only in how it operates but also in changing traveller expectations. I predict that the true value of AI tools in travel is going to be in how they empower consultants and travellers rather than in replacing any of the current fundamentals.

We’re going to have better access to instant availability and real-time pricing, quicker flight quotes, and flight route optimisations. You’ll also have access to immediate updates on flight changes and weather updates and quick answers to questions about things like visa requirements and packing essentials.

Ultimately, this allows both consultants and guests to dedicate more time to planning and enjoying their travel experiences while spending less time navigating logistical complexities.
