When is the Best Time to Visit South Africa?

By Michelle Welvering on September 27, 2024

The best time to visit South Africa really depends on the experience you're looking for, as it's a year-round destination. For a safari, the best time is between May and September (the dry season), whereas Cape Town and the coast are great between November and March (summer). For a sweet spot in between that's not too busy but still a standout experience, we recommend visiting in May or September. Here's our guide to the best season to visit South Africa, including our insider tips.

South Africa

South Africa has so much to offer, no matter the season

What Is the Best Month to Visit South Africa?

So, if you're wondering which month to choose to travel to South Africa, we'll make one thing clear: it's a showstopper all year long. But if you’re looking for that sweet spot, it’s September – hands down!

Why September? Well, this is when South Africa really struts its stuff. It's not too hot, not too cold, and the summer thunderstorms have not yet hit – making sightings of elusive wildlife while on safari so much easier. Plus, you’ve got whales boasting their best breaches along the coastlines of Hermanus and the Garden Route. It’s the perfect combo of spectacular sights without the madness of peak-season crowds.

South Africa Season by Season

Your perfect trip will depend on what you’re looking to do. We'll break it down season by season, so you can decide when the best time to visit South Africa is for you.

September to November: Spring – The Sweet Spot

Spring in South Africa is the most versatile season, with headline experiences on offer in every region. Here are some of the highlights you can look forward to.

Safari Game Drives

Spring is prime time for spotting wildlife in the Kruger National Park. With the dry season at its peak, game viewing is action-packed and the wildlife easy to spot through the sparse vegetation. Plus, if you’ve got a soft spot for baby wildlife, you’re in luck – in late November, they’re all over the place! KwaZulu-Natal’s game reserves are equally thrilling in spring, just before the summer heat kicks in. And if you’re up for a dip, the warm waters off the KwaZulu-Natal coast, in towns like Ballito and Durban, are calling your name.

Coastal and Cape Town Adventures

Cape Town starts heating up for summer, but you'll still manage to dodge the crowds, making it an ideal time to explore before everyone else catches on. The city's top restaurants won't be as fully booked before the December crush, and you can enjoy outdoor gems like Boulders Beach, Chapman's Peak Drive, and all the many wine farms.

Whale Watching

Hermanus offers arguably the finest seasonal land-based whale watching, especially during the Whale Festival, which usually takes place in late September. This is when southern right whales breach and nurse calves in Walker Bay, which you can observe from the cliff path or by charter boat.

Wild Coast Wildflowers

Between August and October, the West Coast explodes into a riot of colour with wildflowers that draw photographers and nature lovers from far and wide. The top spots? Namaqualand and the West Coast National Park – bring your camera, you’ll need it. This season is the best time to visit South Africa for those who love nature at its most vibrant.

December to February: Summer – High Season

Summer in South Africa is a big deal – think sun, sea, and social scenes that could rival any global hotspot. Cape Town’s the place to be, with its beaches and bars buzzing throughout the day and night. If you can handle the crowds, you’ll be in good company, mingling with locals and international jet-setters alike. So, for those who thrive in a lively atmosphere, summer is the best time to visit South Africa.

Cape Town and The Western Cape

This is when Cape Town really shines, with reliable sunshine and a packed events calendar. The beaches are buzzing, restaurants are packed, and there's always something happening. However, this does mean that you need to ensure you book your accommodation and entertainment, such as restaurants, well in advance.

Garden Route

If you want good weather but you’re after something a bit more low-key, head to the Garden Route. This stretch of coastline is dotted with charming beach towns, perfect for lazy days, scenic cruises, and exploring the endless Tsitsikamma forests.

Safari in Summer

Meanwhile, in Kruger National Park, it’s still baby wildlife season, with young antelope and other critters making the landscape come alive. The greenery is lush, thanks to the afternoon showers, and birdwatchers will have a field day with the influx of migratory species.

March to May: Autumn – The Connoisseur's Season

Autumn in South Africa is an underrated season. The temperature drops just enough to make everything a little more comfortable, and the tourist throngs start to thin out. This is the time to explore the Cape Winelands, where the vineyards turn golden, and the wine is always flowing.

Cape Winelands Wine Tastings

Coinciding with harvest time, autumn in South Africa is a great time to explore the Cape Winelands. Franschhoek and Stellenbosch are top picks for wine tastings, gourmet meals, and a stroll through oak-lined streets. Therefore, autumn is the best time to visit South Africa if you’re after a more laid-back, luxurious experience.

Safaris in KwaZulu-Natal

KwaZulu-Natal's safari reserves come into their own during autumn in South Africa, with summer heat fading and impala rutting season commencing (around mid-April to May). It also falls outside of peak season, so availability is better, and the experience is less crowded.

Hiking and Outdoor Exploration

Cooler temperatures make for comfortable hiking, and you'll be spoilt for choice in South Africa! Whether you choose a more challenging multi-day hike like the famous Otter Trail on the Garden Route or opt for a quick morning hike for the views from Lion's Head in Cape Town, outdoor lovers will be in paradise.

June to August: Winter – Peak Safari Season

Winter is the best safari season in South Africa. The dry conditions mean it's easier to spot wildlife, and fewer waterholes mean you get to see more wildlife gathering in one area. Cape Town also slows down, giving you the city’s top attractions minus the queues. If you prefer to avoid the crowds and enjoy the quieter side of the country, we would say that winter is the best time to visit South Africa.

The Prime Safari Season

Winter is peak safari season. With the dry conditions in places like Madikwe Game Reserve and Kruger National Park, the wildlife is out in full force, making it easier to spot the Big 5. The Eastern Cape’s private reserves are just as exciting, and the low rainfall means better visibility all around. Please note that this is also the busiest season in safari regions, so booking well in advance is a must.

Cape Town in Winter

Winter is the rainy season in Cape Town, but it also means the top attractions are generally crowd-free. There's something charming about the Mother City in Cape Town. Think wood-fired hot tub with a view, and warming up with a glass of red in the Cape Winelands, where fireplaces crackle, and off-season deals are a steal. Plus, off-season rates are great and availability is generally not a problem.

Whale Watching Season Starts

The southern right whales make their debut around June, so it's a great time to visit Hermanus and De Kelders (Walker's Bay) before the crowds arrive.

Garden Route's Oyster Festival

Love oysters with a glass of bubbly? The Knysna Oyster Festival usually kicks off in late June or early July. Enjoy oyster tastings, other fresh seafood, and the vibrant atmosphere of the Garden Route.

Scenic Drives

For something different, check out the Panorama Route. Winter’s clear skies make the viewpoints along this route absolutely breathtaking. And yes, it might even snow in the Cederberg or on Route 62, adding a touch of winter wonder to the landscape.
