The Hideaway in Swellendam

By Craig Harding on July 31, 2007

Swellendam is not known to be the most popular stop en route from Cape Town to the Garden Route. In fact most travelers, including myself, have simply passed it by in a rush trying to get to the next destination be it George, Knysna or Plettenberg Bay along the coastal route. This time, we decided to take it slow and enjoy the scenic drive along the Robertson Wine Route from Worcester towards Ashton and bypassing Montagu to this historical town. The drive was surprisingly relaxing and I found it quite peaceful looking at the rolling hills and passing mountains, instead of negotiating other holiday makers and some crazy trucks as you would find on the busy N2. Swellendam is bordering the countryside and I found myself enthralled by the history of the town, by discovering it was the third oldest town in South Africa after Cape Town and Stellenbosch. This gave me more insight as I walked down the main road and tried to picture the old horse carts and carriages that descended upon the area 200 years before.

We were most delighted to spend our first night in the heart of this town, deep in the historical centre and not far from the famous Drostdy Museum. The place we stayed at is called The Hideaway, formerly known as Adin & Sharon’s Hideaway, an award-winning B&B or guest house for the last few years. Adin & Sharon Greaves have recently stepped down from running their prestigious B&B and have handed reigns over to Mark and Diana, who truly have done a great job at taking things over. It literally feels as if you are staying at a home away from home and we really enjoyed the hospitality they offered. Their breakfasts are superb, complete with fresh croissants and home-made jams, scones, muffins and bread – Mark, your croissants were the best we have had in a long time!! They also have freshly squeezed juices and offer you a hot breakfast as well as a selection of teas, coffees and even hot chocolate if you feel up for it!

The rooms are very nicely put together, with antique pieces of furniture, bath robes and slippers to take off the chill of the winter’s nights. Complimentary tea and coffee facilities are available in the rooms, with some home-made shortbread if you want to nibble on something. There is a good selection of books to choose from and internet facilities if you need. The guest house only has 3 rooms, which makes it a comfortable and personal experience and a honeymoon suite is being built to add to the variety that they can offer their guests.

Complete with rose gardens, sheep next door to entertain you and fresh croissants, you will have a great countryside experience at The Hideaway. If you want to learn more about Swellendam, please visit their Tourism Office: https://www.swellendamtourism.co.za/
